## Thatch in Essex

Essex has a long tradition of thatch, and most of it is in the north and west of the county. Villages such as Thaxted, Finchingfield and Great Bardfield have many thatched cottages.

Many Essex roofs are long straw, the old local material, often with a decorative ridge. We thatch in long straw as well as combed wheat reed and water reed, so a listed long straw roof can stay long straw.
